Translation is written. A translator is a person whose job it is to reproduce written words, into a different language. The Latin root of translator is translatus, which means “carried over.” A professional translator (like an interpreter) carries over the exact meaning of the words into a completely different language without omitting from, explaining or adding anything to the original words. Professional translators have had extensive training, they follow very specific protocols and possess specific, expert skills which are related to, but different from interpreters. Many language specialists work with both translating and interpreting.
